NZ Herald featured Emma in a recent article “Government urged to take sex ed seriously as experts, advocates highlight porn’s harmful influence".
NZ Post Journalist Sam Rose consults experts including Ex-All Black Matthew Ridge, Sex Educator Emma Hewitt and Onlyfans Content Creator Layla Kelly to talk about porn's harmful influence on sexpectations. With sex education set to be removed from the NZ curriculum, these experts warned that people's sexual wellbeing and general understanding of sexual practices is at risk.
NZ Herald Journalist Sam Rose states that a recent 2024 Australian study showed that over 57% of people aged 18-35 had been strangled during sex by a partner. The most common place the participants saw this was in pornography, and several did not consent to it.
Emma Hewitt says “There’s this misperception that porn is a form of sex education, right? The fact of the matter is, it’s entertainment. It’s definitely not designed to be educating you.”
With two-thirds of 14-17-year-olds in New Zealand admitting they’d seen porn, taking sexual learnings (like choking) from pornography is becoming more common, and potentially harmful. Hewitt states “It's primarily men doing it to women without consent, but the studies are also saying that a lot of women are now going into sexual encounters with people expecting those things to happen, because it’s become so prevalent.”
Emma Hewitt and other experts warned this shows that "modern-day Aotearoa needs more realistic conversations around sex, not fewer."
